The final moment between Ben and Han’s memory in TROS was more than enough for me.

Instead of the son catalyzing the redemption of his father, the parents are the ones who redeem the son. I like how it reversed the OT’s redemption. That isn’t to say I think highly of Rey and Ben becoming romantically involved, but it’s the lesser of two evils.Īs far as Ben’s redemption, it was quick but earned. I will definitely will disagree that the PT had a more compelling romance arc between Anakin and Padmè, a marriage defined by possessiveness and forced subservience to Anakin on Padmè’s part. Their friendship was a joy to see throughout all three movies. (EDIT: Actually, they did this rather well with Rey and Finn.

I get what they were going for, but I wish they would’ve trusted audiences enough to not rely on overt displays of romances to reinforce the idea of love. Abrams and Chris Terrio (don’t know why we’re blaming Disney when they had little to do with this) to stand by the idea that Rey and Ben have a really intimate relationship in the Force that isn’t defined by romance, but alas. My best guess is that Hollywood doesn’t understand, or more accurately perhaps doesn’t trust audiences to understand, that love can be conveyed without romantic or sexual tension between a non-related male and female character.
